Harp Necklace
- Description
This piece is cast from a 1994 five pence coin and has a fascinating history that reflects both Ireland’s monetary evolution and its cultural heritage. Issued from 1971 until the introduction of the euro in 2002, the Irish 5p was part of a series of decimal currency coins introduced after Ireland adopted the decimal system. These coins replaced the pre-decimal shilling system, aligning Ireland’s currency more closely with international standards.
The harp, prominently featured on the 5p and all Irish coinage, is a symbol steeped in Irish history and tradition. Known as the “Cláirseach” in Irish, the harp has been a national emblem of Ireland since the Middle Ages. Its use on Irish coins dates back to the coinage of Henry VIII, making it one of the oldest continuously used national symbols in currency history. This harp design on the 5p, which first appeared on Irish coins in 1928, is modelled after the “Brian Boru Harp” from the 14th/15th century.
The addition of the harp to the 5p and other coins was a conscious choice to link Irish currency with national identity. The Irish Free State introduced it in 1928 to distinguish itself from British currency and assert a unique Irish identity. Over time, the harp has become synonymous with Irish pride, culture, and sovereignty.
This 5p coin is perfect for those born in 1994 but also carries a lot of symbolism, making it a meaningful piece for any Irish heritage enthusiast.
