What is Champlevé?
Champlevé enamelling (pronounced shahm-pluh-vay) is an ancient technique used to create vibrant, durable enamel designs on metal surfaces. The process uses recessed areas which are carved, etched or cast into a metal base. These are then filled with coloured vitreous enamel (a type of powdered glass). The piece is then kiln-fired at high temperatures, fusing the enamel to the metal. Once cooled, the surface is polished to create a smooth, glossy finish, with the raised metal edges acting as natural dividers between the colours.
This technique has been used for centuries in jewellery, decorative art, and even historic artefacts, thanks to its rich, long-lasting colours and intricate designs. As the enamel sits within the metal rather than on top of it, Champlevé pieces are particularly durable and resistant to wear, making them perfect for jewellery that’s both beautiful and long-lasting.
